Big Changes Coming to Google Workspace for Education – What Schools Need to Know
Published on  Updated on

Google has announced major updates to Google Workspace for Education that will take effect starting October 1, 2025. These changes will impact schools, districts, and higher education institutions, especially those using Education Standard or relying on free staff licenses.

Key Changes:

  1. One Paid Edition Only:
Google is discontinuing Education Standard. Moving forward, Education Plus will be the only paid edition available.

  2. Free Staff Licenses Ending:
Currently, schools receive 1 free staff license for every 4 student licenses. After October 1, 2025, that model ends—all users (students and staff) will need paid licenses.

  3. New Minimum Requirements:
Schools must purchase the greater of:

  • 50 Education Plus licenses, or

  • Enough to cover all enrolled students and staff

  1. Price Increase:
The price for Education Plus will increase from $5 to $6 per user per year. New customers will pay the higher price starting October 1, 2025. Existing customers will see the increase on renewals beginning February 1, 2026.

What You Can Do Now:

To avoid higher costs and retain free staff licenses, we recommend securing a 3-Year Education Plus license now. This locks in the current $5/user rate and keeps free staff licenses for the term.
